As I posted a new blog tonight, I realized that I hadn't posted since 2016. But it was on a particular date. <p></p><p>The day before a dear friend died. </p><span><a name='more'></a></span><p><br /></p><p>Well, not just a friend. My ex-husband, Liam. We were not typical exes. We had a deep friendship that we clung to after parting ways romantically that deepened and maintained our strong familial tie. We were important to each other. He had been a constant in my life in ways most people aren't. Our friendship spanned the time between late 1996 and April 6, 2016, when he died. </p><p>So, in a likely unsurprising turn of events for those who have experienced a painful loss, I haven't quite been the same since. I am forever changed. The tumultuous waves of grief have passed, for the most part, but I'm a different person now, 6 years later. Eroded away by salty tears. </p><p>Another strange thing is how grief can cause other pains. Chronic pains and illnesses that I didn't have before seem to have been launched by it. Coping mechanisms washed away. </p><p>But I live still and can try again, unlike him, who would have been 53 tomorrow.</p><p><br /></p>Devlynhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09994869957762128906noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-531693537272987782.post-70706868394326380472022-04-19T04:39:00.002-04:002022-04-19T04:39:49.938-04:00How To: Lacing Bodices<p> </p><h1 style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; color: #0e101a; font-weight: normal; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;"><br /></h1><p style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; color: #0e101a; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;"><span data-preserver-spaces="true" style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;">Being laced improperly is a huge pet peeve for me. <br />
I've seen several organizer projects for purses, but I wanted something seriously simple, so I took an <a href="http://www.ialwayspickthethimble.com/2014/11/02/find-it-fast-diy-purse-organizer/" target="_blank">existing project</a> and made it lazy.<br />
<br />
First thing to decide, is how wide you want your organizer. My purse was 7" wide, so I went with 6.5", but it needs to be a bit wider, because once you fold it and add stuff to the pockets, it narrows. Next time I'll do something a bit wider, but for these purposes, this is for a 6.5" wide by 6" tall organizer.<br />
<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

As I
noted with a client this week, you start with a blank slate and build
the look together in this fantastic, creative process, eliminating
options until you narrow it down to the garb of their dreams.<br />
<br />
One of the hardest things to do, is to build a color pallet from
scratch when you can't come visit me in my studio and can't compare
colors side by side. If you're a woman, the focal point of your outfit
is probably your bodice, so that's where I start. The bodice is also
your most expensive piece, so it's good to spend extra time on it.<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjfXu5pBL7UoMsXuWZALJ-pchYXkyCazY3dBA_FQDRz6A8_VjrkiBOyRc_SSZc3mapRq8OADHgeHnpDGdY9jYC3zFw77Ypmc53cA1iIrIEfk5VmsPQSRrINggPRT6A1suWpaRkFoNcSMMXJ/s1600/IMG_4233.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img align="left" alt="Bodice Color with Black Trim" hspace="10" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjfXu5pBL7UoMsXuWZALJ-pchYXkyCazY3dBA_FQDRz6A8_VjrkiBOyRc_SSZc3mapRq8OADHgeHnpDGdY9jYC3zFw77Ypmc53cA1iIrIEfk5VmsPQSRrINggPRT6A1suWpaRkFoNcSMMXJ/s1600/IMG_4233.JPG" style="height: 267px; width: 200px;" title="" vspace="10" /></a>
<br />
<span style="background-color: white;">I have often said that if you pair a jewel tone (Sapphire, Emerald,
Ruby) with black, you've made yourself a good piratical color pallet.
Just take a look around faire the next time you go and see what the
pirates are wearing. Lots of red and black, blue and black, green and
black, etc. Black is not necessary for a pirate look, but it definitely
makes it easier.</span><br />
<br />
However, that's not the only thing you can wear. In this example, we
used gold as our main neutral tone, as opposed to black, and paired it
up with a rich burgundy/wine color. Black is an accent, but not the
main focal point. We also had to remember to pick fabrics that would
work with an existing green satin waist cincher.<br />
<br />
We chose <a href="https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/05fIj5rD80VJP-qPEhXEz9MTjNZETYmyPJy0liipFm0?feat=directlink" target="_blank">redtap39 - Wine/Gold Scroll</a> for our <a href="http://oddbodkin.com/shop/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=120&products_id=592" target="_blank">Wench bodice</a> and added black bias tape for trim to
be able to tie in other black elements. The bodice will also be getting
black laces and gold grommets. While the fabric itself isn't terribly
piratey, almost any fabric can be explained away with a good story.<br />
<br />
A
bodice is one of your most expensive purchases, so it's wise to pick
something that will be versatile, that you love, and that looks amazing
on you.<br />
<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhzbIBQqHCaHuTXKg85Y5Wr_189rMwNG2Gt2pv61z1umtiUlpNoRLtEredVT3bF9rATzLwgZ-gdjykgIQ9mbFgCZhY9RgfVNO-nnISyQBRTjiXR9kqOoTeRgLV3MA0HCPvwEuG_QzaDmuFO/s1600/IMG_4235.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img align="right" alt="Angel Chemise" hspace="10" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhzbIBQqHCaHuTXKg85Y5Wr_189rMwNG2Gt2pv61z1umtiUlpNoRLtEredVT3bF9rATzLwgZ-gdjykgIQ9mbFgCZhY9RgfVNO-nnISyQBRTjiXR9kqOoTeRgLV3MA0HCPvwEuG_QzaDmuFO/s1600/IMG_4235.JPG" style="height: 150px; width: 200px;" vspace="10" /></a><br />
<br />
Next up was choosing the colors for the <a href="http://oddbodkin.com/shop/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=4&products_id=404" style="background-color: white;" target="_blank">Angel Chemise</a>. We chose taupe, which was a fantastic match for the gold tones in the bodice fabric, and added wine/gold celtic knot trim, wine bias tape and gold venetian lace.<br />
<br />
Pirates are flamboyant creatures, so when building your garb, make sure to include something with flair, even if you are a lowly cabin boy.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh3IpqgN_ZGZ1N36r30cpLakxPHTQqga5C2AcxJu1oHQr0O8qgJP7sW_1jV6ZmPQQtXXvUkxaXRLmdK1cAbogseMPRonbEyHvTNn2uYhyDfXhRs9ptI8S-SLDQ_qRBiAn3bTwUubww3gR2T/s1600/IMG_4237.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img align="left" alt="Circle Skirt" border="0" hspace="10" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh3IpqgN_ZGZ1N36r30cpLakxPHTQqga5C2AcxJu1oHQr0O8qgJP7sW_1jV6ZmPQQtXXvUkxaXRLmdK1cAbogseMPRonbEyHvTNn2uYhyDfXhRs9ptI8S-SLDQ_qRBiAn3bTwUubww3gR2T/s1600/IMG_4237.JPG" style="height: 150px; width: 200px;" vspace="10" /></a>
<br />
<br />
The plan was always to include a black <a href="http://oddbodkin.com/shop/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=8&products_id=12" target="_blank">Circle Skirt</a> that could be tucked up high on the
hips and show the bloomers and thigh high boots beneath, so that was
probably our easiest choice.<br />
<br />
When building your wardrobe, include some simple mix and match
pieces that you can pair up with other items down the road.<br />
<br />

<br />
Our final piece to add were the <a href="http://oddbodkin.com/shop/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=1&products_id=635" target="_blank">Bloomers</a>. We chose a vibrant wine color along with
gold venetian lace to really tie the whole outfit together. <br />

We also had to make sure that all of our pieces would go well with
the existing green satin <a href="http://oddbodkin.com/shop/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=120&products_id=657" target="_blank">Waist Cincher</a> and they do!<br />

When building your new garb wardrobe, take into account items that
are already in your closet and try to incorporate them or match them if
you can.<br />

Tips for Pirate Garb:<br />
<br />
<br />
<ul>
<li><span style="background-color: white;">Pick a neutral base like black, gold or silver and pair it with a strong jewel tone.</span></li>
<li><span style="background-color: white;">If you choose an unusual fabric or color, have a good story to go with it.</span></li>
<li><span style="background-color: white;">Start with your most expensive piece, usually the bodice or doublet.</span></li>
<li><span style="background-color: white;">Include at least one flamboyant conversation piece to your wardrobe.</span></li>
<li><span style="background-color: white;">Include some simple pieces that you'll be able to use with various outfits.</span></li>
<li><span style="background-color: white;">Try to incorporate the things you already have(and love!) or re-purpose them.</span></li>
</ul>
<div>
Remember, pirates existed all over the world, so have fun with it! Incorporating Mediterranean, Asian and Carribean influences can always result in a new story about your travels on the Seven Seas!</div>

<p style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; color: #0e101a; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;"><span data-preserver-spaces="true" style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;">The Countess Bodice sounds awfully fancy, and it can be. It is the most versatile, practical bodice you can buy, whether dressed up or down.</span></p><p style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; color: #0e101a; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;"><span data-preserver-spaces="true" style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;">The idea for this bodice started way back in 2001 while I was still traveling with a company called The Pirate's Treasure, selling swords at Renaissance Festivals. I wore bodices a LOT and, of course, made my own. I usually wore the Goddess Bodice because it was so darned comfy for those long faire days. One problem is it laces in the back. The more we traveled, the harder it was to find someone to lace me in properly.</span></p><p style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; color: #0e101a; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;"><span data-preserver-spaces="true" style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;">The front laced bodices I was making at the time were too hard on my back, especially during long workdays. That was before I figured out the </span><a class="editor-rtfLink" href="http://picasaweb.google.com/oddbodkinrenshop/DucktailOrNoDucktail#" style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; color: #4a6ee0; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;" target="_blank"><span data-preserver-spaces="true" style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;">Ducktail</span></a><span data-preserver-spaces="true" style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;">. So the goal with this style was to have a goddess-style bodice that I could lace up myself. I didn't just want to put front-middle laces because that would be a front-laced bodice. I'll probably do that with a different bodice. I also thought that I could make replacement stomachers (the middle piece that forms a V in the front) in various fabrics to go with my outfit. I never got around to that with this bodice, as I tested it for comfort and overall style.</span></p><p style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; color: #0e101a; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;"><span data-preserver-spaces="true" style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;">To the right was my first ever attempt. I made it out of black velvet, and from what I can tell looking at pictures, I loved this bodice! It had several flaws, which is why the prototype is so important so I can test it in the field myself.</span></p>
